The ADM10231 is a 2-channel digital thermometer and under-and overtemperature alarm for use in personal computers andother systems requiring thermal monitoring and management.Optimized for the Pentium® III, the higher accuracy allowssystems designers to safely reduce temperature guard bandingand increase system performance. The device can measure thetemperature of a microprocessor using a diode-connected PNPtransistor, which may be provided on-chip with the Pentium IIIor similar processors; or it can be a low-cost, discrete NPN/PNPdevice such as the 2N3904/2N3906. A novel measurementtechnique cancels out the absolute value of the transistor’s baseemitter voltage so that no calibration is required. The secondmeasurement channel measures the output of an on-chiptemperature sensor to monitor the temperature of the deviceand its environment.The ADM1023 communicates over a 2-wire serial interfacecompatible with SMBus standards. Under- and overtemperaturelimits can be programmed into the device over the serial bus,and an ALERT output signals when the on-chip or remotetemperature is out of range. This output can be used as aninterrupt or as an SMBus ALERT.
